Winter Sun - the ideal remedy for post-Christmas blues
With Christmas around the corner, thoughts will be turning to mulled wine, mince pies and mistletoe. But what about afterwards, when the January blues begin to sink in? This is when many Britons fed up with the long, cold nights will dream of winter sun destinations.
Fortunately, there are plenty on offer from airlines operating from Belfast's two airports, and with ticket prices at historically low levels there has never been a better time to book ahead.
The Canary Islands
One of the most popular winter sun spots is Tenerife, the largest island in the Canary Islands archipelago. It boasts year-round sun, a host of world-class hotels and terrific cuisine, as well as world-class beaches such as the popular Playa de las Americas, Playa de las Galletas with its sports installations and the laid-back Playa de El Puertito.
The Costa Adeje area in the south-west (comprising Las Americas and Los Cristianos) is known for its top-notch facilities including terrific shopping centres, golf courses, aquaparks and animal parks - in short, something for everyone.
Jet2.com offers scheduled flights to Tenerife from Belfast International, while charter services are run by operators including Thomas Cook, Spanair, MyTravel Airways and Thomsonfly.
Turkey
Alternatively you could jet off to Turkey to dispel those post-Christmas blues, and Bodrum is a good bet. Pretty white houses flank the hillsides, and down at the sea you can go swimming, snorkelling, scuba diving and windsurfing.
Bodrum is also known for its lively nightlife - as Lonely Planet puts it, "Bodrum's famous discos throb, boom and blare".
First Choice Airways, Thomas Cook Airlines and MyTravel Airways all offer charter flights to Bodrum from Belfast International, and all three carriers also fly to Dalaman, another gateway for holidaymakers visiting Turkey.
Egypt
Another popular spot for winter sun is Sharm el Sheikh, which is located on the coast between the Red Sea and Mount Sinai. Originally a small fishing village, it has grown to become one of Egypt's premier holiday spots and is one of the world's top five diving locations.
Stunning coral reefs boasting more than 1,000 species of marine life lie underneath the inviting blue waters. Colourful fish, sharks, dolphins and turtles are all here to see, as well as shipwrecks including that of the British vessel Thistlegorm which was sunk during WWII.
MyTravel Airways and Thomas Cook Airlines both offer charter services to Sharm el Sheikh.
