Domestic flights 'convenient' for many passengers

Domestic flights can benefit many travellers in terms of convenience, according to Air Transport Users Council (ATUC).

James Fremantle, industry affairs manager at the ATUC, said: "Air flights provide direct services from different regions. That has got to be a benefit to a lot of users, the fact they can get from one region to another by plane and don't have to connect via one or two different train stations.

"FlyBe seem to be opening up new domestic routes nearly every month now. A lot business people do use it, but it's also people visiting friends and family."

The Airport Operators Association reports that there has been a 78 per cent rise in the use of airports in the last decade, with percentage of passenger traffic going to regional airports rising from 39 per cent to 48 per cent since 2001.

The Civil Aviation Authority reported that 241 million passengers passed through UK airports in 2007 – up 2.4 per cent from 2006. London airports accounted for 58 per cent of the total and regional airports took 42 per cent.

Nine regional airports handle more than five million passengers per year - Manchester; Birmingham; Edinburgh; Glasgow; Bristol; Newcastle; Liverpool; East Midlands; Belfast International - and a further nine handle more than one million passengers annually.ADNFCR-1390-ID-18694003-ADNFCR
