New funding for Belfast tourism

There could soon be even more reasons to go to Belfast after the city's visitor bureau received a huge funding boost.

Northern Ireland Tourist Board (NITB) has pledged to give up to £717,500 a year to Belfast Visitor and Convention Centre (BVCC) for the next three years.

The deal will contribute to a total of £4.1 million funding per year for the BVCC, with other private and public sector partners also investing.

Both of Belfast's airports will benefit, with some of the money being used for welcome centres at Belfast International Airport and George Best Belfast City Airport.

Alan Clarke, chief executive of NITB, said: "Our collective target in the tourism industry in Northern Ireland is to grow visitor numbers by 25 per cent and visitor spend by 40 per cent by 2011.

"BVCB has a key role to play in support of these targets and our priorities lie in developing the city as a gateway, conference and city break destination."

NITB was created in 1992 and oversees all tourism development in the country.ADNFCR-1390-ID-18807633-ADNFCR
